Jávea is a town with life all year, not just in summer. The Port and the old town keep their shops, market and services in winter; the Arenal quietens down out of season. The mild climate, neighbours from many countries and motorway access to Valencia and Alicante mean many families and remote workers settle here permanently.
A town that doesn't switch off in winter
When summer ends, Jávea returns to its small-town rhythm: markets, local shops, coastal walks and routes up the Montgó. Some beach businesses close or shorten their hours, but daily life carries on in the Port and the old town.
Choosing an area to live
Each area has its own character, and it's worth trying them at different times of year.
- Old town: village life, shops and services on foot
- Port: seafaring feel, promenade and year-round activity
- Arenal: beach and restaurants, quieter out of season
- Montgó and residential estates: more space and nature, a car is almost essential
What to bear in mind
On many residential estates a car is needed for daily life. Houses near the sea need more maintenance because of humidity and salt, and it's worth checking insulation and heating, as winter nights can be cool.
If you are moving from outside Spain, you will need an NIE and, depending on your situation, to register on the local census (padrón) and apply for residency.
